Celebrating 25 years of independence

New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association, Inc.

On the above date at approximately 6:30 pm, an Officer assigned to the kitchen observed an inmate sitting down in the pot room.  The Officer gave the inmate several orders to complete his work.  The inmate refused to work and then, without provocation, punched the Officer in the face multiple times.  As the Officer was falling to the floor, he attempted to defend himself with strikes and body holds.  During the assault, the Officer was able to activate his personal alarm and a Sergeant, along with a response team, arrived on the scene.  The team was able to use body hold to restrain the inmate and then apply mechanical wrist restraints.
As the inmate was being escorted to the medical unit, he became combative and spit blood on an Officer.  He then kicked at the Officer, striking him on the shin.  The inmate then became non-compliant with all staff direction and would not continue walking.  As the Officers were carrying the inmate to the medical unit, the combative inmate kicked an Officer striking him to the face.  The escort was then completed and the inmate was placed in a holding pen in the medical unit where he became compliant.
The originally assaulted Officer was transported to Albany Medical Center via ambulance for treatment was unable to return to duty.  All other involved Officers remained on duty.
