While exiting a court proceeding in Brooklyn State Supreme Court the inmate became disruptive and refused to comply with directions to be placed in mechanical restraints. In an attempt to deescalate the situation, the Sgt. escorted the inmate from the court room in wrist and leg restraints only. As the elevator descended to the 3rd Floor, the inmate pushed the Sgt. forward as he attempted to pull away and run. While the Sgt. attempted to maintain control of the inmate’s wrist restraints, the inmate pulled him and they both fell backwards onto the floor. While on the floor the inmate began to kick wildly with both of his legs. An Officer then stepped on the leg iron chain to prevent him from kicking staff while the Sgt. used body holds to gain control of the inmate while giving him verbal directions to comply. After assisting the inmate to his feet, he was then escorted into the second elevator where he began to bang on the elevator walls with his upper body and head. The Sgt. and Officer used body holds to take control of the inmate to minimize the injuries he was inflicting on himself. Once he was placed in the State van, the inmate began to head butt the seat belt harness on the forward most rear seat then rolled onto his back and attempted to kick the window and ceiling while spitting on the Officers. A Departmental Spit net was then applied by the Sgt. while he used and upper body hold to control the inmate while in his seat. While another Officer used body holds to maintain control of the inmate’s wrist restraints, the inmate suddenly turned toward the Officer and bit him on his left outer arm through his jacket piercing the skin. The Sgt. used body holds to pull both the inmates shoulders backwards and held the shoulder against the seat for the remainder of the trip. The Officer again used body holds to maintain the inmate’s wrist restraints and held the restraints for the remainder of the trip.
