While making rounds during inmate cell cleanup, the Officer approached an open cell to question the inmate as to whether or not he was going to clean. The inmate, without warning, grabbed the Officer by her left forearm and attempted to drag her into the cell. The Officer broke free from his grip and pushed the inmate away. The inmate continued to grab at her as the Officer administered an application of OC Pepper Spray. The desired effect was not achieved and the inmate continued to pull the Officer into his cell. The Officer, using upper body holds, was able to bring the inmate to the floor of his cell. As the inmate continued to resist, another round of OC Pepper Spray was applied without the desired effect. Another responding Officer arrived and directed the inmate to put his hands behind his back to which the inmate finally complied. Mechanical wrist restraints were applied and all force ceased.
The Officer was sent to Orange Regional Medical Center to have multiple injuries evaluated and treated. She received injuries to her face, knees, ribs, hip, and shoulder. The Officer was released from the hospital, but could not return to duty.
