New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association, Inc.

At approximately 11:15 am, two Correction Officers were conducting a search of the common areas in a housing unit at Wallkill Correctional Facility. As the Officers passed an inmate’s cell, they observed that the inmate was rolling a green leafy substance in paper. The Officers stopped and ordered the inmate to surrender the contraband. The inmate suddenly attacked the lead Officer by punching him in the face several times. Both Officers used body holds in an attempt to subdue the inmate by bringing him to the floor. The inmate continued to resist, biting both Officers during the struggle. Several Officers responded to the radio call for help and assisted in subduing the inmate and applying mechanical wrist restraints. Both Officers were taken to an outside medical facility for treatment of their injuries and were unable to return to duty. The inmate was transferred to Sullivan Correctional Facility.
